The NFL trade deadline is fast approaching and teams are making moves as they finalize their rosters for the 2024 season. Among those in the trade spotlight is New Orleans Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore, who is rumored to be a key target for the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chiefs, in pursuit of their third consecutive Super Bowl title, are urgently seeking to bolster their secondary. This comes after the team’s decision to trade away L’Jarius Sneed in the offseason, leaving a significant void.
Sneed’s departure came as part of the tough choice between retaining him or Chris Jones, with the team opting to keep Jones. The move, while strategic, has left the Chiefs with a younger and relatively less experienced secondary.
They currently rely heavily on star Trent McDuffie, with Jaylen Watson and Joshua Williams also in the rotation, but the team clearly feels a need for more depth and experience in that area.
Trading for Lattimore could be a decisive move for Kansas City. Lattimore has had a robust career with the Saints, demonstrating consistent performance even in the face of injury challenges.
In 2023, he notably maintained a reception percentage allowed of just 58.7% and 317 yards with only one touchdown and six pass breakups. Across his career, Lattimore has racked up 67 pass breakups, 17 interceptions, a 57.7% reception rate against him, and 349 tackles, making him an ideal fit for the Chiefs who are looking to strengthen their defensive backfield.
The Saints seem in a position to make this trade happen, possessing quite a depth in their cornerback group with players like Alontae Taylor, Paulson Adebo, and Kool-Aid McKinstry. Trading Lattimore would also assist the Saints in managing their salary cap more effectively, giving them financial flexibility for other tactical moves.
For the Chiefs, acquiring Lattimore would not only fill the gap left by Sneed but add a veteran presence that could greatly enhance the development and performance of the younger players in their secondary. As the deadline draws near, all eyes will be on these teams to see how they maneuver their rosters for a successful 2024 campaign.
